Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>As part of its tax base expansion program, the Kenya Revenue on Wednesday will undertake a data collection exercise on rental properties within Nairobi and Nairobi Metropolis.<\/p>\n

In a notice by the tax man, KRA officers involved with the exercise will identify themselves using the authority’s staff identification cards.<\/p>\n

‘These cards can be verified by dialling the USSD code *572, through the KRAM-service App or using KRA Thibitisha which is hosted on the KRA website, www.kra.go.ke,” reads the notice.<\/p>\n

KRA has called on the public to cooperate and provide the information required during the exercise.<\/p>\n

The county has 17,000 houses in Maringo, Uhuru, Kaloleni, Jericho, Buruburu, Kariobangi South, Ziwani and Jerusalem where tenants pay between Sh2,000 and Sh20,000 monthly rent depending on the location.<\/p>\n

It also has houses in other parts of the city.<\/p>\n

In May 2019, it was revealed that City Hall is owed Sh224 million by tenants living in the over 16,000 county houses across the capital.<\/p>\n

Nairobi county housing director Marion Rono back then said the debt had been accrued by tenants residing in 16,746 houses belonging to City Hall.<\/p>\n

It was revealed that defaulters were the biggest contributors to the dwindling collections with tenants in houses in Maringo and Woodley estates, the biggest culprits.<\/p>\n
