Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>The General Service Unit men’s volleyball team coach Gideon Tarus is spoilt for choice as he braces up for the new season slated for December.<\/p>\n

The paramilitary side broke their bank to rope in three quality additions. Enock Kiptum (setter), center player Dominic Chelule and libero William Odong’o have impressed during the preseason and will be crucial in the 2022-23 season.<\/p>\n

The trio was instrumental as the five-time consecutive national champions romped to the Nyerere Cup tournament title glory in Tanzania a fortnight ago. GSU beat Rwanda’s APR 3-1 in the final, the first time the team conceded a set in the competition.<\/p>\n

Tarus said the competition for places is stiff in the squad and every player will be granted playing time with the African Club Championship just around the corner.<\/p>\n

“Actually, it is a good problem for me. The new players have awakened some of the sleeping giants and I no longer have to bank on certain players to carry the team. Whoever will be picked for duty, I have no doubt they’ll deliver.”<\/p>\n

Tarus hinted that his charges return to training today after their exploits in the Tanzanian capital. The serial-winning coach presumed that there’s more to be done in coordination and they will work tirelessly to ensure there’s telepathic understanding in the system of play.<\/p>\n

“Coordination is still not at the level we want. Chelule was among the best middle blockers last season and his willingness to join GSU made the transfer easier.”<\/p>\n

He added: “Kiptum is promising and will push Brian Melly to his limit. Odong’o is equally good but he must overcome stage fright. Handling pressure is key for him but there’s room for improvement.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the duo of Phosca Kasisi and Mildred Cherop are already in Dar-es-salaam for the International Beach volleyball tournament set for today and tomorrow. The pair are the champions of the 2022 Julius Nyerere International Beach Volleyball Cup which was held in Coco Beach.<\/p>\n

Besides Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi and Malawi, who will honour the event, eight German players will also grace the occasion.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, international player Veronicah Adhiambo helped Tarsus Belediyespor beat the ALS volleyball team in straight sets in her first professional stint in Turkey.<\/p>\n
