Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Youths who were working under the Kazi Mtaani Initiative will be employed to plant trees, President William Ruto has said.<\/p>\n

He said tree planting will save the country from the adverse effects of climate change.<\/p>\n

While speaking at a Church service in Murang’a on Sunday, Ruto said the move is in line with the goal of planting five million trees in the next five years.<\/p>\n

“The government shall join all Kenyan citizens to plant 5 million trees in the next five years. Each one of us, the County Governments, the National Government, all the other agencies, the private sector, and all other business traders shall join hands to plant trees to restore our rivers and get rainfall again,” he said.<\/p>\n

The President said that embracing the tree-planting initiative will not only create employment but also save the country from climate change.<\/p>\n

“The Kazi Mtaani Initiative will now be the initiative for the environment. All the youths employed under the Kazi Mtaani will now be employed to plant trees so that we make sure we have enough trees in the country,” he said.<\/p>\n

Ruto abolished the Kazi Mtaani Initiative saying it is outdated.<\/p>\n

\u201cKazi Mtaani is now outdated. Collecting garbage is not going to be the case anymore. Houses will now be our business and the youths are going to get jobs,\u201d he said at a function in Kibera.<\/p>\n

The Kazi Mtaani Initiative was started by former President Uhuru Kenyatta.<\/p>\n
