Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Former Azimio running mate Martha Karua has backed her boss Raila Odinga’s call to have jailed Sirisia MP John Waluke set free.<\/p>\n

The Narc-Kenya party boss reiterated that Raila was right in pointing out what she termed as ‘double standard’ in the justice system.<\/p>\n

Raila had over the weekend regretted that Waluke was wallowing in jail, yet some people he said are ‘politically correct’ walk free.<\/p>\n

The Azimio leader called for Waluke’s release on bail.<\/p>\n

He spoke during the funeral of the mother of Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa.<\/p>\n

Karua defended Raila saying although his example may be seen as inappropriate, Raila was spot on about the double standards.<\/p>\n

She said the double standards are being advanced by the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.<\/p>\n

“He is saying if we no longer believe in the criminal justice system, if we no longer believe that criminals should be behind bars, then release everybody. He gave the example of Waluke,” Karua said.<\/p>\n

She went on, “I am giving the example of the chicken thief, of those petty offenders who fill our jails, open them and review their cases. Do does not review the cases of only the politically correct. That is what my principal was saying, and I understood him”.<\/p>\n

Speaking on Wednesday during an interview at Spice FM, Karua said the media took what Raila said out of context.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust like the other people who have more serious cases in court, Sirisia MP Hon. John Waluke deserves a fair hearing and treatment… his case was civil, and it doesn\u2019t call for such a punitive and sentence of 67 years. The Court of Appeal should grand him bail,\u201dRaila said.<\/p>\n

Karua said she knows that Raila is a man who believes in the rule of law and discrimination, which is double standards, is forbidden in the constitution.<\/p>\n

Waluke was sentenced by a magistrate’s court to 67-year jail term imposed over Sh313 million NCPB graft case.<\/p>\n

The High Court upheld the judgment after Waluke appealed. He has moved to the Court of Appeal.<\/p>\n
