Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has arrived in Burundi where he is expected to facilitate peace talks to end the conflicts in Eastern Congo.<\/p>\n

Uhuru is the East African Community facilitator of the inter -Congolese Consultations and Dialogue on peace restoration.<\/p>\n

Uhuru will hold talks with Burundian President General E\u0301variste Ndayishimiye.<\/p>\n

Ndayishimiye is the current rotational chairperson of the East African Community, on the DRC peace process.<\/p>\n

Uhuru’s peace talks trip comes hours after President William Ruto flagged off more than 900 military personnel DRC.<\/p>\n

The troops will join a new regional force tasked with trying to calm deadly tensions fuelled by armed groups.<\/p>\n

On October 31, Uhuru called on the parties involved in the DRC conflict to “agree to a cessation of hostilities” and engage in peace talks.<\/p>\n

Uhuru had further emphasized that there is no military solution to the conflict but that of embracing peaceful talks.<\/p>\n

“The EAC calls on the parties to the current skirmishes to immediately halt their offensives, agree to a cessation of hostilities, allow for unhindered and sustained humanitarian access, withdraw and vacate from occupied areas and pursue a negotiated settlement through peace talks,” read part of his statement.<\/p>\n
