Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>President William Ruto is expected Saturday in Turkana County where he will launch a massive state food distribution campaign to Kenyans ravaged by drought.<\/p>\n

The President who has also dispatched his Cabinet to other counties to oversee food distribution is also expected to make an appeal to the international community to help Kenya save lives.<\/p>\n

Ruto will visit Nakaalei in Turkana South where he will oversee the distribution of food stuffs to families worst hit by hunger pangs occasioned by the country’s worst drought in decades.<\/p>\n

Thousands of families in the region are barely surviving, with children facing starvation and on the verge of death as hunger bites hard.<\/p>\n

Images from the drought hit counties showing children being fed with wild fruits have been heart-wrenching.<\/p>\n

The President has assured Kenyans that his administration will scale up immediate response to starving Kenyans in at least 23 counties worst hit by drought.<\/p>\n

The State is also rolling out long term interventions to address prolonged effects of drought including investing in at least 100 dams across the country to enhance irrigation-fed agriculture to achieve food security.<\/p>\n

Turkana governor Jeremiah Lomorukai said this week at least 800,000 residents are facing starvation with the Global Acute Malnutrition rate rising to 34.8 per cent.<\/p>\n

The State will this week launch a livestock off-take programme in pastoralist counties to cushion farmers from large scale losses as animals starve to death.<\/p>\n

Ruto will also use his tour of Turkana to address the security challenges occasioned by bandits that have had a field day in the North Rift.<\/p>\n
