Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>National Assembly Deputy Speaker Gladys Shollei has said that police should start wearing body cameras so that they can be held accountable when interacting with the public.<\/p>\n

Shollei said that monitoring interaction between police and the public will help to fight corruption among police officers.<\/p>\n

Speaking on Monday, Shollei said that Kenyans can adopt the use of technology to stop corruption.<\/p>\n

Shollei said that police officers receive bribes and delay producing suspects in court, hence they should be monitored.<\/p>\n

\u201cPolice officers bring remandees to the court and sometimes they don’t bring them on time so the cases can’t proceed. Sometimes you find remandees bribing police officers to avoid being taken to court,\u201d Shollei said in an interview with Citizen TV.<\/p>\n

“This can end by police officers wearing body cameras so that we can see what they are doing at all times.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shollei said that by monitoring police, the country will move forward in offering justice to citizens.<\/p>\n

\u201cDuring my tenure, we established something we call ‘Faini Chapchap’ where people got instant fines. Immediately the collection of traffic fines at that time in Kibera Law Court moved from Sh50,000 a day to almost Sh500,000,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is because the fines were directly paid to the court as opposed to paying the police officers and other side people.\u201d<\/p>\n
