Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Following a disastrous performance at the Hong Kong Sevens Shujaa face another stern test at the Dubai Sevens, where they are in Pool ‘A’ alongside on-form Australia , South Africa and Great Britain.<\/p>\n

Kenya had one of their worst performances in recent history, losing all their five matches in the Far East.<\/p>\n

They fell 28-12 to Ireland, 26-7 to Argentina, 19-14 to Canada, 43-0 to New Zealand and a shock loss to newbies Uruguay to finish last in the 16-team tournament, alongside hosts Hong Kong.<\/p>\n

Off the pitch issues have plagued the side since returning from the World Cup sevens in South Africa in September with contracts, allowances and poor training facilitates being the major talking points.<\/p>\n

Head coach Damian McGrath is yet to be paid two months salary and the mood within the team is low following the underwhelming start to the season and the challenges they have faced in training.<\/p>\n

Shujaa finished a dispiriting 12th last season with a paltry 49 points from 10 tournaments, narrowly surviving relegation from the core series. They only made it to the Main Cup quarters on three occasions, twice in Dubai and in the final leg in Los Angeles in August.<\/p>\n

And with World Rugby reducing the teams from 16 to 12 for the 2023 -2024 season, McGrath’s charges have work to do.<\/p>\n

The 15th ranked core team following the conclusion of tenth round in Toulouse will be relegated.<\/p>\n

The teams ranked 12th, 13 and 14th will enter a four-team relegation playoff along with the Challenger Series 2023 winners at the 11th and final round of the series in London.<\/p>\n

The other groups in Dubai are: Pool ‘B’ Fiji, Argentina, New Zealand and Uruguay; Pool ‘C’ France, Ireland, Spain and Uganda; Pool ‘D’ Samoa, Canada, USA and Japan.<\/p>\n
