Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>A new body has been unveiled to assist the government and the sporting fraternity in matters affecting the administration and practice of sports.<\/p>\n

The new body will be known as Sports and Recreation Professionals of Kenya.<\/p>\n

According to the new body’s president Martin Yauma, sports in Kenya have continued to suffer a bad reputation due to a lack of well-laid regulations to govern this crucial sector.<\/p>\n

Lack of synergy, selfish interests, and poor relations among sports stakeholders has continued to be a barrier to the country’s bid to develop sports.<\/p>\n

“Today is a momentous day in the history of the sporting fraternity in Kenya because we are announcing the entry of the long-awaited force in the management of sports and recreation activities in the country,” said Yauma.<\/p>\n

“Since independence, this country has never experienced professional management of the sporting sector.<\/p>\n

“Long before institutions of higher learning began offering specialized courses, management of this sector was left to individuals who were only \u2018passionate\u2019 but not skillful about it.<\/p>\n

“We thank them for having brought it this far and assure them that their effort shall not go to waste.”<\/p>\n

He said SRPK will also oversee registration, protection and assist members of the sports fraternity in respect of conditions of practice as well as protect and assist the public in all matters touching sports practice and products.<\/p>\n

The body will also establish cooperation and collaboration with other sports professional bodies recognized by the government.<\/p>\n

“It is imperative that the real economic and social value of sports is taken seriously by all stakeholders in Kenya to ensure Kenyans are the eventual beneficiaries.”<\/p>\n

“It is for this reason, therefore, that we have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure we deliver to the country its first professional outfit bringing together all sports stakeholders.”<\/p>\n

SRPK will roll out a massive sensitization and recruitment drive across the country so as to strengthen the outfit from the \u2018bottom up.<\/p>\n

He went on: “Government’s support to sports is so far appreciated, but we believe more can be done by enhancing resources that promote sports talents in Kenya. In addition, sports talent is not being professionally detected, identified, nurtured and exploited.”<\/p>\n

Yauma also called for the review of the Sports Act, 2013 to accommodate this new development, along with the other issues aimed at growing the industry.<\/p>\n

“Soon, we shall be tabling a comprehensive report on the gaps that we have identified with the legal framework that has been in operation for almost a decade now, to make it more vibrant and better responsive to our needs.<\/p>\n

“It is common knowledge that sports can be used to curb unemployment amongst the youth and reduce crime and other societal ills such as drug abuse. Moreover, sports can make a considerable contribution.”<\/p>\n
