Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Kenya Simbas will need an overhaul in defense, lineout and attack in their final match of the World Cup repechage against Hong Kong on Friday.<\/p>\n

The match against the Asian outfit will be a formality after Hong Kong lost 49-7 to USA Eagles to bow out of contention for a slot in next year’s Rugby World Cup.<\/p>\n

The Simbas suffered one of their heaviest defeats in recent times when they lost 85 -0 to a rampaging Portugal team on Saturday to see their World Cup dreams end in tatters.<\/p>\n

It was the heaviest defeat since 2006 when the Simbas lost to Namibia 84-12 in Windhoek. Odera said the line-out disintegrated in the match against the Europeans.<\/p>\n

“Our lineouts, which for the better part of the year, have operated above 70-80 percent, did not just click and the Portuguese were able to force turnovers from there and score tries,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The former Kenya Under-20 coach said the attack needs to be refined after a horror show against the Portuguese.<\/p>\n

“In attack, we were not making quick decisions and our basics let us down for the duration of the match,\u201d noted Odera.<\/p>\n

He said the lack of training camp before the repechage has reduced the boys to playing the second fiddle in the qualifiers so far.<\/p>\n

“All this boils down to lack of playing a competitive fixture since July and I believe this has done the boys a big disservice because we are undercooked,” he revealed.<\/p>\n

He termed decision-making as another factor in the defeat. \u201cWe have to look at the decisions we took including running onto the ball and working hard off the ball,” noted Odera<\/p>\n

Odera said he will work with mental skills coach Alexander Neto of Chile to come up with a plan this week ahead of the game against Hong Kong.<\/p>\n

“I’m designing a plan with Alexander. We will need a response against Hong Kong to come up with a win on Friday,” added Odera.<\/p>\n

The Portuguese scored 13 tries with 10 conversions as they made light work of Kenya in a one-sided contest. Portugal led 35-0 at halftime.<\/p>\n

The winner of Portugal v USA match slots in Group C, where Australia, Wales, Fiji, and Georgia await next year.<\/p>\n
