Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale has chided into the recent proposed bill that counties should be added to 52.<\/p>\n

Khalwale said counties should even be reduced to 10, to aid in creating workable devolved units.<\/p>\n

He went on to give his proposed names of counties if they were to be reduced to 10.<\/p>\n

“Attempts to create five more counties must be defeated,” he said.<\/p>\n

“If anything, counties ought to be matched to ten, creating economically viable devolved units. They should include Coast, North Eastern, Upper Eastern, Lower Eastern, Central, Nairobi, North Rift, South Rift, Nyanza and Western.”<\/p>\n

Khalwale was reacting to a drafted radical bill by Kuria East MP Marwa Kitayama to increase the number of counties to 52 .<\/p>\n

Kitayama has proposed the creation of five new counties of Kuria, Teso, Mount Elgon, East Pokot and Mwingi.<\/p>\n

The Star has established that although the bill has been drafted by Kitayama, it enjoys the support of a significant number of MPs across the political divide.<\/p>\n

Notably, during campaigns for the last general election, President William Ruto vowed to push for the creation of Mwingi county if elected.<\/p>\n

Kitayama told the Star on Tuesday that his bill will address the country’s perennial challenges of ethnic antagonism that has been blamed for tribal tensions.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the only solution to the historical ethnic tensions that result in highly divisive elections,\u201d the MP said.<\/p>\n
