Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Some Rift Valley MPs have threatened to impeach Trade CS Moses Kuria over the decision to allow the importation of GMO maize.<\/p>\n

Addressing the media on Tuesday, the MPs led by Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei protested the importation of maize, demanding that the Trade ministry halts the process immediately.<\/p>\n

“As MPs from maize-producing regions, we seek to know the reason as to why ships are already docking in Mombasa Port without the laid out legal procedures,” Cherargei said.<\/p>\n

Pokot South MP David Pkosing said that they will collect signatures from Wednesday seeking to impeach Kuria if he doesn’t change.<\/p>\n

“He will be the first Cabinet Secretary to leave office. We will impeach him. We will collect signatures if he doesn’t change,” he said.<\/p>\n

Trade Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria had on Monday said a legal notice for the importation of Genetically Modified Maize by millers was due this week.<\/p>\n

However, before the State would give legal authority for the importation of maize, the Ship docked at the Mombasa Port.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday , it was announced that Kenya will receive several tonnes of maize, days after the government said it will open a window for duty-free GMO maize to enter the country.<\/p>\n

The move will address the biting food crisis.<\/p>\n

According to a statement from the Kenya Ports Authority released on Monday, 37 vessels are expected at the port of Mombasa.<\/p>\n

Number four on the list, the Africa Merlin Ship, carrying bulk maize and empty bags is said to have arrived on Monday.<\/p>\n

Immediately, opposition leaders attacked the government claiming that the move has exposed schemes to defraud Kenyans.<\/p>\n
