Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Defending champion Nelson Koech is banking on home advantage to retain the Nandi Bears Open Shield title this weekend.<\/p>\n

The event is part of the Kenya Amateur Golf Championships circuit. Koech, who won the inaugural tournament last year, is optimistic that his training skills will give him the second title on the par 72-hole course.<\/p>\n

Subsidiary events will be played on Friday before the main two-day event that tees off on Saturday in a 36-hole show.<\/p>\n

Last year, he fired one under par 143 gross for the title edging out top-brass golfers.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have been focusing more on chipping as I seek to retain my title. Just like last year, I am doing a lot of practice and home advantage should play in my favour,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He said due to financial constraints, he has not played many tournaments across the country like last year and lies in position 20 with 20 points compared to last year when he finished the circuit in position 7.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince the year started, I have only played in six tournaments across the country and that can’t guarantee me a slot in Team Kenya. However, a win at home will give me more advantage to move up the ladder. I have not been able to compete in many events due to financial hiccups,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

Club captain Kimeli Mutai said he expects a packed field again after looking at the number of entries for the tournament.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter hosting a successful event last year, I know the numbers will increase this year. However, we are prepared for them and there is no course for alarm,\u201d said Mutai.<\/p>\n

He said they have maintained the sponsors, who supported the inaugural edition.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe managed to get the National Bank of Kenya (NBK) as our sponsor and we will have good prizes for all. This time, the course is in good condition since it has been raining in this area,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
