Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Seven players will represent the country at the Rwanda Tennis Open slated for Kigali on December 12-16. The team will have Kael Shah, Albert Njogu, Keean Shah and Derrick Ominde in the men’s category while Cynthia Wanjala, Claire Muthoni and Monica Kahura will fly Kenya’s flag in the women’s category.<\/p>\n

Kenya will be up against hosts Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe in the four-day tourney. The Kenyan contingent will be hoping to finish the year strongly following a lethargic performance during the recent Women’s World Tennis Tour at the Karen Club last weekend.<\/p>\n

Tennis Kenya (TK) administrator Nancy Nduku said the women players will have an advantage after featuring in the recent World Tennis Tour. \u201c This tournament gives them a good opportunity to gauge themselves after the recent tournament at Karen and go on a good run,\u201d she noted<\/p>\n

Ominde said he hopes for a better turn of fortunes after early exits in the home tournament. “This is a good opportunity to test myself against the better players and finish the year on a high as we look forward to next year.”<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, Wimbledon doubles junior champion Angela Okutoyi has climbed 182 places to a new career high of 1145 in Women Tennis Association rankings announced on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Okutoyi had a career-best of 1501 on July 31 but did not have a ranking going into the two W15 Nairobi World Tennis Tour events held from November 13 to 27 at the Karen Country Club in Nairobi.<\/p>\n

Okutoyi moved up the ladder after chalking up six points out of a possible 10 when she lost against German Emily Seibold in the singles final in the first W15 Nairobi tournament on November 20.<\/p>\n

Okutoyi will take a break before departing for Auburn University in the United States of America in the new year. This year alone, she bagged the Wimbledon, J1 Repentigny and W15 Nairobi doubles titles this year,<\/p>\n
