Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Imara Bella Thorpe will spearhead Kenya’s charge at the FINA World Swimming Championships slated for Melbourne, Australia from December 13-18.<\/p>\n

Thorpe, who has amassed 675 FINA points will have Ali Lubaina (573) for the company in the girls’ category with Ivan Hart (672 points) and Arya Muravya (561 points) in the boys’ category.<\/p>\n

Abdulmalik Abdulkarim will be the team manager for the four-man squad.<\/p>\n

Team Kenya will be competing under a neutral flag as Kenya is still suspended by the world governing body, FINA over failure to conduct elections.<\/p>\n

Making the announcement, FINA Stabilisation Kenya committee member, Francis Mutuku, urged the team to do the country proud in the event.<\/p>\n

“We want them to follow the example set by their teammates who were impressive at the recent CANA event in Tanzania,” he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe team has been selected on merit and I hope they can be competitive and fly our flag high for the event,\u201d added Mutuku.<\/p>\n

He adds that the four swimmers have been training under their various coaches and will be expected to arrive in Australia next week.<\/p>\n

Lubaina, who swam recently at the CANA event in Tanzania, said she was hopeful of improving her times.<\/p>\n

\u201c This will be a tough event but I’m delighted with the selection. I hope to get to my final in the breaststroke and freestyle event,\u201d she noted.<\/p>\n

She added that she is hopeful she will get a chance to compete in Paris Olympics in 2024 and future World Championships.<\/p>\n

Swimming stakeholders have expressed optimism that the long-awaited elections will be conducted by the end of the year after several false starts in the last two years.<\/p>\n

Nairobi county Swimming secretary Kenneth Karani is hopeful that normalcy will return next year.<\/p>\n
