Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Homeboyz have appointed Oscar Okaron as head coach for the 2022-2023 Kenya Cup season.<\/p>\n

The diminutive playmaker, who guided Koyonzo to the national schools’ title as well as the Western region title in 2020, will be hoping to leave a mark on the Deejays for the upcoming season.<\/p>\n

The former Kabras and Western Bulls player is bullish about the side’s chances this season after an underwhelming campaign last season.<\/p>\n

\u201cI’m ready to step into the big shoes of top tier rugby and with the team we have and the support of everyone at the club we can challenge for the top honours,\u201d noted Okaron.<\/p>\n

Okaron takes over from Kenya sevens international Oscar Ayodi who led the side to a fourth-place finish at the national sevens circuit in July. Coaching a club side and a school team are two different things, which need different approaches.<\/p>\n

\u201cSchool rugby and club rugby are very different but the principles remain largely the same. You have to win the collisions upfront with the forwards and be solid in the set piece. You must also have a good attack and defence,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The Deejays finished eighth last season and the new tactician hopes to tweak the squad and believes they will be able to get into the mix for the playoffs.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have a couple of ideas that I want to implement with the team to see where it will take us. This is a young squad full of promise and ability and we are looking to finish the season strongly,” added Okaron.<\/p>\n

The Deejays face Strathmore Leos, former champions KCB and last season’s losing finalist Menengai Oilers before the league takes a break next month. He said he will be taking one game at a time.<\/p>\n

“It’s a tall order but I know the boys will be competitive and we will see where it leaves us before the Christmas break.”<\/p>\n

Okaron has also had coaching stints with his former alma mater Kakamega High School as well as won two Kenya Technical Institutes’ sevens titles with Sigalala Technical Institute.<\/p>\n
