Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Masinde Muliro rugby head coach John Asila wants the team to improve on the set-piece and forward play if they harbour hopes of finishing in the playoff positions come the end of the season.<\/p>\n

The Kakamega-based side have lost their two opening games of the Kenya Cup, going down 23-21 to Strathmore Leos and 41-0 at the hands of KCB.<\/p>\n

The tactician believes they have no choice but to get parity upfront for their remaining fixtures.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s not been a great start to the season and we have work to do especially in the forward play. I want to ensure we are competitive in the lineouts and scrums,\u201d added Asila.<\/p>\n

It doesn’t get easier for the Lurambi boys as they face last season’s losing finalists Menengai Oilers on Saturday with Asila expecting a stern test from the Nakuru-based outfit.<\/p>\n

\u201c It will be a tough game but the boys have worked hard in training this week and we want to minimize our penalties, utilise our opportunities and be competitive for the 80 minutes,\u201d added Asila.<\/p>\n

Asila exuded confidence that his team can rise to the occasion despite a slow start.<\/p>\n

“The boys have the mentality to rise to the occasion. We know the league is a marathon and we know what to do going forward to get results,” he said.<\/p>\n

Last season, they finished ninth on the log with 18 points having won four matches and lost seven.<\/p>\n

Oilers are at joint top of the standings with 10 points alongside Kabras and KCB with Gibson Weru’s charges having a superior goal difference to their rivals.<\/p>\n

Former champions Mean machine, Quins and Catholic University monks are in the bottom three with no points and are winless so far in the season. The top four teams will qualify for the playoffs come the end of the season.<\/p>\n
