Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has said the move to abolish boarding in primary schools is ill-advised.<\/p>\n

In a statement on Tuesday, Sonko said that boarding schools are safe for children.<\/p>\n

“In my own opinion I think the move is ill advised. For some children a boarding school is the best and safest place to be away from chaotic marriages, torture from step fathers, mothers, uncles and aunts,” he said.<\/p>\n

Sonko said that although it is not his position to criticise the government, it should review the abolition.<\/p>\n

His sentiments come after the government abolished boarding primary schools for pupils learning in grades 1 to 9 starting January 2023.<\/p>\n

Basic Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang’ said that parents will have to take their primary schools kids to day schools.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe must create a way in which we can be with our children and the only way is through day schooling. The first nine years of learning that are Grades 1 to 9, the direction that the government is taking will be day schooling,\u201d Kipsang’ said.<\/p>\n

Kipsang’ said that parents have the primary responsibility as first educators to walk with their children and ensure that they acquire the right values they desire them to have.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe cannot outsource our responsibility as we parents, we only co-parent with teachers but we cannot outsource parenting from the teachers,\u201d Kipsang’ said.<\/p>\n

\u201cGoing forward, day schooling will be the direction, that\u2019s the only way we shall be able to engage with our children.\u201d<\/p>\n
