Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>The National Police Service\u2019s (NPS) Internal Affairs Unit has gotten a new director.<\/p>\n

Assistant Inspector General of police in charge of reforms at NPS David Birech was named the new director to succeed the Director of Criminal Investigation Mohamed Amin.<\/p>\n

Birech took over at IAU on Wednesday, December 7 in a brief ceremony at the KCB centre in Upperhill.<\/p>\n

A memo sent from IAU acting director Esther Ng\u2019ang\u2019a to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority said Birech had taken over.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are pleased to write and bring to your attention that Mr David Birch, MBS psc'(R), Assistant Inspector General of Police has succeeded Mr Mohamed I. Amin as the Director of the Internal Affairs Unit.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHis appointment was communicated to the Unit by the Inspector General of the National Police Service on 2nd December 2022. Prior to his appointment in the current position, he was the NPS Director of reforms at JogooHouse,\u201d said the memo signed by Ng\u2019ang\u2019a.<\/p>\n

The memo said Birech is ready to partner with IPOA to fulfil the IAU statutory.<\/p>\n

Birech had also worked as a Staff Officer training at Vigilance.<\/p>\n

He is a seasoned officer with an experience in investigations and reforms.<\/p>\n

He is among those who tried to succeed as DCI at Mazingira Complex on Kiambu Road.<\/p>\n

The Unit has also received ten new seasoned investigators from DCI.<\/p>\n

They were identified and recruited last year but due to logistical issues, they remained at the DCI until recently when they reported to strengthen the investigations department.<\/p>\n

Part of the functions of the unit includes receiving and investigating complaints against police.<\/p>\n

It also promotes uniform standards of discipline and good order in the service and keeps a record of facts of any complaints or investigations made to it.<\/p>\n

Without making prejudice the Unit may where necessary investigate and recommend appropriate action in respect of anyone found engaging in any unlawful conduct.<\/p>\n

The unit is currently handling dozens of complaints against police, among them claims of extra-judicial killings.<\/p>\n

Among the cases include one of two missing Indians and their Kenyan driver.<\/p>\n

For now, police are investigating crimes of abduction and conspiracy to commit a felony.<\/p>\n

The Indians Mohamed Zaid Sami Kidwai, Zulfiqar Ahmad Khan and their driver Nicodemus Mwania Mwange who were abducted near Ole Sereni and driven away in an unmarked car on July 23 are missing.<\/p>\n

Twelve police officers from Special Service Unit are under probe.<\/p>\n
