Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Football Kenya Federation chief executive officer Barry Otieno has voiced his confidence that Kenya will win the hosting rights for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.<\/p>\n

A Cabinet decision was made on Tuesday to make the country a co-host of the event with other East African nations, and Otieno believes the plan will come to fruition.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe would like to thank the government for showing a desire to support Kenyan football. With the kind of support and enthusiasm displayed by the Cabinet Secretary for Sports thus far, I\u2019m sure we can make Afcon a reality in Kenya,\u201d Otieno said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHosting Afcon will most definitely put Kenya on the world map. We are confident the CS can steer us to the heights we\u2019ve been desiring including expediting the process of constructing quality stadia that can host such big tournaments,\u201d Otieno said.<\/p>\n

The FKF honcho said there is a lot more that needs to be done for the national team, Harambee Stars to secure a World Cup appearance as envisioned in the government\u2019s plan.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe success of a national team does not depend on the quality of the players alone. There is a lot that is required for us to achieve that and all the key stakeholders must agree to work towards the goal,\u201d Otieno said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to borrow a leaf from Morocco and try to find out what they have done differently to take their team to the quarter-finals of the World Cup.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need enough money to support the team, to put in enough structures and infrastructure to help us achieve our goals.\u201d<\/p>\n

Harambee Stars will get a big boost in achieving their ultimate goal of qualifying for the 2030 World Cup if Kenya hosts the African continent, according to the Cabinet.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a step towards achieving Harambee Stars\u2019 goal of qualifying for the Fifa World Cup in 2030, the Cabinet approved the proposal to organize the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) in 2027, together with the EAC partner countries. The joint bid will deploy the power of sports in developing regional cooperation,\u201d part of the resolutions read.<\/p>\n

A lack of standard sports infrastructure prevented Kenya from hosting the tournament in 1996.<\/p>\n

In 2018, Kenya was also unable to host the African Nations Championship (CHAN) for the same reason. Addressing the media last week, CS Namwamba expressed his wish to have Harambee Stars qualify for the 2030 World Cup.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a vision for 2030 that at the bare minimum, Kenya must participate in the World Cup in 2030. If we can make it to the 2026 World Cup, that would be great but we are being realistic that with the right investment and planning, we can get Harambee Stars to the World Cup in 2030,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He promised to develop a comprehensive plan aimed at spotting and developing talent in the country to accomplish this ambitious plan.<\/p>\n
