Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Voting exercise for the various elective position is currently underway in Bungoma County and five wards. The exercise started on Thursday at 6 am in various polling centres but there were no long queues.<\/p>\n

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) had gazetted December 8, 2022, as the date for the Bungoma Senate by-election and the other wards This is after officeholder Moses Wetang’ula was elected Speaker of the National Assembly on September 8, 2022.<\/p>\n

Kenya Kwanza is fielding two candidates with President William Ruto backing Mwambu Mabonga and Moses Wetang\u2019ula and Musalia Mudavadi drumming up support for David Wafula.<\/p>\n

UDA candidate Mwambu Mabonga cast his vote at Mwiyenga Primary in Bumula. At around 7:00 am, Speaker Wetang’ula arrived at Namakhele primary school in Kabuchai to cast his vote. The Bungoma Senatorial race has attracted several candidates.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, the electoral agency embarked on the distribution of ballot boxes and other election materials to polling stations and urged voters to turn out in large numbers to vote for their preferred candidates.<\/p>\n

The IEBC county boss Grace Rono assured the electorate and candidates of a free and fair election. The candidates had made their final pitches to the electorate with each saying they are best suited to replace Wetang\u2019ula.<\/p>\n

Mabonga is in a hot contest with Azimio’s Wafula Wamunyinyi and Ford Kenya’s David Wakoli. At least,646,612 people are expected to vote. Also, by-elections for South Gem Ward in Siaya County, Kyome\/Thaana in Kitui County, Oloimasani Ward in Narok County, Utawala Ward in Nairobi County and Mumias North in Kakamega County are also underway. The elections for the five wards were postponed following the death of candidates who had been cleared.<\/p>\n
