Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>The Eldoret International Airport’s runway will be expanded to four kilometres, to accommodate bigger planes.<\/p>\n

Roads Cabinet secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said 15.61 hectares (38.57 acres) will be required for the extension.<\/p>\n

In his submissions to National Assembly’s Committee on Transport and Infrastructure, the CS said the airport has one runway, which is 3.5km long and 45m wide.<\/p>\n

“It currently handles Ethiopian Airlines and Emirates, both operating wide-bodied cargo aircraft (B777) from the Middle East,” he said.<\/p>\n

“In order to optimise take-off operations at maximum take-off weight by the aircraft, KAA intends to undertake and expansion.”<\/p>\n

The CS was responding to a question asked by Baringo Central MP Joshua Kandie.<\/p>\n

Murkomen had issued instructions on the rehabilitation of airfield ground lighting.<\/p>\n

He further directed on the provision of taxiway and runway shoulders for safety as well as expansion of the apron area to accommodate more aircraft.<\/p>\n

The CS also gave the order for acquisition of an additional 19.74 hectares (48.77 acres) of land for the development of hangar facilities.<\/p>\n

Eldoret International Airport, which was opened 24 years ago remains under-utilised in terms of exports and contribution to the county and regional economy.<\/p>\n

The facility was expected to boost agriculture in the region through exports as well as promote tourism.<\/p>\n

Flower farms and other fresh produce in the North Rift region of Uasin Gishu and Trans Nzoia counties transport their produce by road to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for export.<\/p>\n

There have also been mounting calls from different quarters to extend the runway by 500metres from 3.5 kilometres to four kilometres to accommodate larger freight flights<\/p>\n
