Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Kenya teams National Cereals and Produce Board and Nairobi Water Queens were on Saturday crowned winners of the East and Central Africa Club Champions (ECAHF) in Zanzibar.<\/p>\n

NCPB humbled Ngome of Tanzania 24-18 to win the men’s title while Water Queens hit compatriots NCPB 25-21 to retain the women’s regional title. The millers, who sadly lost last year’s event after going down 28-27 to Rwanda Police, led 11-7 in the first half and stemmed a fierce fightback by the top Tanzanian side.<\/p>\n

The quartet of Timothy Kirimi, Robert Maranga, Nicholas Okore, and William Maluo led the new champions with four goals each. They finished the tournament with an unbeaten run, winning all four matches for eight points. Ngome are second with six.<\/p>\n

“When we left the country, one of the targets was to win the trophy and my boys did well to achieve that feat,” said a beaming coach Bryan Mathews. “It was a tough game and my two goalkeepers did well to put them at bay,” he said.<\/p>\n

In the ladies’ last match, Nairobi Water Queens took an 11-5 goal difference at the breather and went on to bag their ninth consecutive title. Cecilia Katheu was tops as she hit seven goals with inspirational captain Grace Chilo and Faith Mikhala each managing four in the win.<\/p>\n

NCPB, who finished third last year, had seven goals from Leli Akinyi and four each from Belina Achieng, Akinyi and Adda Musilibi. “I am happy too with the girls’ achievements. They were third last year and managed to move one step. This shows good progress,” noted Mathews.<\/p>\n

“Playing Water Queens is always tough. This team has a lot of new players and they are gelling well and we will pick it up from here.” Water remained unbeaten with eight points from four games while NCPB managed six, JKT four, Ngome and SoS nil.”<\/p>\n
