Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Kenya Simbas duo of Kabras’ flyhalf Brian Tanga and Menengai Oilers’ centre John Okoth have been drafted to the Shujaa squad ahead of the Hamilton and Sydney Sevens tournaments in January next year.<\/p>\n

Speaking on Thursday, head coach Damian McGrath said the two have been called up to add experience to the squad as the team looks up to move up the standings following a dismal start to the campaign.<\/p>\n

“We are quite thin on experienced players in the squad with only Nelson Oyoo, Billy Odhiambo and Willy Ambaka.<\/p>\n

Bringing in Tanga and Okoth who have played at the international level before, will be a big boost for us as we hunt for consistency in the reminder of the series,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Englishman said he is delighted with the improvement in skill levels but insists the team must show consistency going forward if they are to be in the top eight come the end of season.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are on a rollercoaster of a season. There were some bright moments in Dubai but we could not replicate the same in Cape Town a week later.<\/p>\n

There are some aspects of our play we have to keep improving on especially kickoff reception, catch and pass, defence as well as reducing the margin of error going forward,” said McGrath.<\/p>\n

McGrath spoke on the sidelines of a sponsorship presentation where gaming firm SportPesa signed a three-year deal with Kenya Rugby Union worth Sh126 million with a further Sh20 million in bonus to the players should they reach the Cup final, semis and quarters .<\/p>\n

“For the long-term, player welfare has been sorted and now we can concentrate on matters on the pitch and give 100 percent,\u201d noted McGrath.<\/p>\n

KRU chairman Odour Gangla said the new deal will help the union tie down players on longer contracts in readiness for the 2024 Paris Olympics. SportPesa CEO Ronald Karauri said:\u201cWe are delighted to be back in rugby even though we have not come in a big way as we did before.<\/p>\n

This is just the start and the reason we have a three-year deal is so that at the end, we can definitely increase it to something bigger. \u201d
