Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong\u2019o has written to the county security team over worsening cases of insecurity within Lakeside city, appealing for urgent intervention.<\/p>\n

The governor in the letter seen by the Star noted that his office has been receiving many complaints from the Public on the increasing cases of violent robberies, muggings and break-ins.<\/p>\n

People have lost their lives while others have escaped with life-threatening injuries. The insecurity concerns, Nyong’o noted, came out prominently during the last Jamhuri day celebrations.<\/p>\n

Civil Society organizations have also issued press statements on this matter. Nyong’o said members of the County Executive Committee also raised this issue which is likely to affect the economy of the county.<\/p>\n

“In view of the above, I appeal to the County Security Committee for urgent intervention. The County government is ready to be incorporated in any discussions and interventions to fight this wave of crime,” the governor stated.<\/p>\n

In the meantime, he said the police should increase patrols and intelligence gathering around the crime hotspots to help identify and punish the culprits.<\/p>\n

“We should also re-activate and strengthen community policing to help reign on these criminal gangs,” he said in the letter addressed to the County commissioner and copied to the Regional commissioner and the county secretary.<\/p>\n

Nyong’o further stated that it was also important to investigate the trend of these attacks since they are being executed in a similar fashion. This comes barely five days after the lobby group in Kisumu petitioned the government over the increased insecurity which has resulted in killings and maiming of citizens.<\/p>\n

Led by Kisumu City Residents Voice Association chairman Audi Ogada, the groups said the responsibility to protect citizens is placed on the government through its institutions. In the last 20 months, Ogada said more than 25 people have been brutally attacked and 11 murder cases reported.<\/p>\n
