Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Speaker Amason Kingi has gazetted a special sitting of the Senate to consider Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza’s impeachment. In the notice dated December 17, Kingi said the lawmakers will convene Tuesday, at 2.30 pm in the senate chambers.<\/p>\n

“I have appointed Tuesday, December 20, 2022, as a day for the special sitting of the Senate,” the notice reads in part.<\/p>\n

The sitting follows the official notification of the speaker by Meru assembly Solomon Bundi on the MCAs’ resolution on the impeachment of the governor on Thursday.<\/p>\n

The process for removal of a governor is provided for under Article 181 of the Constitution. A member tabling the motion must receive the support of two-thirds of MCAs to move the motion. 67 out of 69 MCAs voted to remove her.<\/p>\n

At the Senate, there are two ways in which the matter can be determined. It is either a plenary where the parties will be allowed to defend and or lay their case before the whole House before a vote is undertaken.<\/p>\n

Senators may also decide to form a committee which will be made up of 11 members to probe the matter. Voting in either of the two ways will be by delegation, this means only elected members will participate. At least 24 senators of the 47 will be required to approve the resolution of either approving or rejecting the impeachment.<\/p>\n
