Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Lugari MP Nabii Nabwera now wants TSC to urgently deal with teachers shortage in Kakamega county. Kakamega is among counties with the highest teachers shortage.<\/p>\n

Nabwera spoke on Monday when Teachers Service Commission met the education committee to respond to questions. TSC was put to task to explain their failutre to hire intern teachers despite having the budget to do so.<\/p>\n

\u201cAssuming there was no directive from the President where is the assurance that you were going t recruit these teachers,\u201d Nabwera said. The lawmaker urged the commission to fasten the hiring process in the affected counties.<\/p>\n

\u201cKakamega has a deficit of 6129, Baringo 669, with total national shortage of 48327. As TSC you need to deal with this shortage which is now becoming of concern,\u201d Nabwera said.<\/p>\n

The debate on teachers shortage heated up to the point that Luanda MP Dickson Maungu called for an audit of the process. Maungu said TSC recruitment formula should be audited for the past ten years.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf the commission saw a shortage of thousands then it means someone slept on their job,\u201d Maungu said. However the TSC chairman Jamleck Muturi explained that the commission hired based on shortage.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe recruitment exercise will be conducted at the subcounty level and successful candidates posted by the county directors to serve in any primary or Junior secondary school in the county where they applied or where the vacancy exists,\u201d Muturi said.]<\/p>\n

In the Financial Year 2022\/2023 the Commission was allocated a budget for recruitment of 6,000 teacher interns (4,000 for Secondary and 2,000 for primary). The total Number of Teachers to be recruited is therefore 36,000.<\/p>\n

On December 10, the Commission advertised some 35,550 vacancies distributed as follows: 9,000 posts on Permanent and Pensionable terms for secondary school teachers to be posted to junior secondary schools.<\/p>\n

1,000 posts on P&P for primary school teachers. 21,550 posts for teacher interns in junior secondary schools. 4,000 posts for teacher interns in primary schools<\/p>\n
