Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Security has been heightened in Nyanza counties ahead of Christmas and new year celebrations. To ensure residents of the region goes about their businesses without hindrance, Nyanza regional police commander Karanja Muiruri said both night and day patrols have been intensified.<\/p>\n

Muiruri said police officers will not go on leave during this festive period to ensure incidents of crime are dealt with firmly. And to ensure road traffic accidents in the region are reduced, the Nyanza police boss on Friday led a multi-agency team in conducting a major crackdown on traffic offenders.<\/p>\n

Several motorists plying the Kisumu- Busia and Kisumu Bondo were arrested during the crackdown that caught many travellers unawares. The multi-agency team that brought together national government administration officers, KRA officers and traffic enforcement officers also placed a roadblock along Kisumu Ahero- Kisii Road.<\/p>\n

Speaking to journalists at Kisian Roadblock, Muiruri who was flanked by base commanders from Maseno, Kisumu Central and other outlying traffic bases within Kisumu county said those who were arrested were immediately arraigned in court for violating various traffic rules.<\/p>\n

Vehicles impounded, which included matatus, buses, tuk tuk and private cars were taken to the regional training centre in Kisumu to await inspection by the motor vehicle inspection unit officers.<\/p>\n

“Our officers are targeting drivers who don’t have a driving licence, Vehicles without insurance, others with worn-out tires, PSVs that are overloaded and drunk drivers,” he said.<\/p>\n

He said that passengers who boarded overloaded Vehicles were asked to alight and advised to seek alternative modes of transport. They were warned but allowed to go while the Vehicles were detained and drivers arrested.<\/p>\n

“We want members of the public to support the police in this campaign which seeks to ensure every Kenyan get to his or her destination safely. They should not board overloaded Vehicles,” he said.<\/p>\n

The regional police commander said the crackdowns will go on until January 2 and directed all the county police commanders and the base commanders across Nyanza to do the same in their respective areas.<\/p>\n

“Ensure that your vehicle is roadworthy before you use it on our roads and don’t drink and drive, for your safety and the safety of other road users,” he said. He asked various security agencies to remain vigilant and ensure law and order is maintained across Nyanza.<\/p>\n

“As you celebrate Christmas and new year, we in the security sector will be on high alert. We will ensure that acts of lawlessness are handled firmly and promptly,” he emphasized.<\/p>\n
