Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Doctors have demanded full implementation of the 2017 Collective Bargaining Agreement ahead of mediation talks with the government in January. The talks set to begin on January 1 are aimed at averting a strike notice issued by the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU).<\/p>\n

In a letter on Friday, secretary general Davji Atella said the union officials met a conciliator in efforts to address issues raised by the medics. He said the conciliator is scheduled to meet government officials on January 5 and January 9, 2023.<\/p>\n

\u201cKMPDU is tasked with the responsibility of providing details of specific doctors with complains of comprehensive medical cover, release for post graduate training and promotions,\u201d the letter reads in part.<\/p>\n

During the talks, the union will also provide a list of county governments which violate CBA clauses among other individual claims and grievances. Atella accused the notational government of refusing to obey court orders directing them to implement the CBA in question.<\/p>\n

He insisted that should they fail to reach a consensus after the January talks, the strike will go on as planned. In the letter, he urged doctors to avail themselves, should the union need them to fuel the strike.<\/p>\n

The letter to union members comes a day after Health CS Susan Wafula called on doctors to reconsider their stance and give dialogue a chance. The CS on Thursday acknowledged that there exist challenges in the health sector and urged the unions to embrace dialogue.<\/p>\n

“My office has already initiated conversations around the issues raised by KMPDU and I’m persuaded that we will find a common ground as patriots serving one nation.” KMPDU on Monday issued a 30-day strike notice over failure by the government to implement the 2017-2021 CBA.<\/p>\n
