Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>At least 7,608 households in Isiolo county will celebrate Christmas with joy as the county government distributes food. Governor Abdi Guyo on Saturday led his administration in the second phase of the exercise.<\/p>\n

The emergency food distribution targeted the most vulnerable households in Sericho and Cherab Wards. “Despite having long term mitigations of combating drought is still on, my administration has also laid down short term measures that have progressed well in terms of relief food distribution,\u201d Guyo said.<\/p>\n

In the second phase of the relief food distribution, the county targeted most affected areas by the ongoing drought where 3,477 beneficiaries were reached in Sericho ward while another 4130 beneficiaries received the food rations in Cherab ward.<\/p>\n

Each household got 6kgs of Rice, 3kgs of maize flour and one litre of cooking oil. Sericho ward received a total of 835kgs of rice, 435 bales of maize floor and 290 cartons of cooking oil while Cherab ward will received 992kgs of rice, 517 bales of maize floor and 345 cartons of cooking oil.<\/p>\n

Deputy director for administration Mario Bonaya revealed that another consignment of food commodities is expected to be distributed in mid January, 2023.<\/p>\n

“As part of long term mitigations of drought related programmes, the governor promised to provide clean drinking water and now the borehole drilled at Qone will supply water to Modogashe residents, putting an end to water shortage in the area,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

In early October, Governor Guyo flagged off 20 trucks of relief food to at least 24,000 households ravaged by drought. Guyo said his administration came together and procured the food, which will be distributed to residents in 10 wards.<\/p>\n

In Garbatula subcounty, 2,856 households will receive food aid, 5,000 in Merti, 2,016 in Oldonyiro, 3,400 in Sericho, 2,015 in Ngaremara and 6,000 in Isiolo Central.<\/p>\n

The communities in these areas are predominantly pastoralists who depend on rearing of cows, goats, sheep and camels. The prolonged dry spell has depleted nearly all pastures, threatening pastoralism, which is the main source of livelihood for the majority of the residents.<\/p>\n
