Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>President William Ruto has asked for patience from Kenyans as he moves to turn around the fortunes of the country. Speaking during Christmas celebrations at Eldoret Sports Club in Uasin Gishu, Ruto said leaders asking him to show what he has achieved so far should take it slow.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet us first put the economy of the country on the right footing. We cannot build the economy from borrowed money, funds that the countries we are borrowing from saved,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n

Ruto said the government will increase revenue collections by 20 per cent in the current Financial Year. \u201cWe want the number to be going up every year until we use our own resources to drive the economy,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n

The President regretted that the country has been using 65 per cent of its revenue to pay debts. On Thursday, Azimio la Umoja coalition leader Raila Odinga accused Ruto of failing to honour the promises he made to Kenyans during the campaign period.<\/p>\n

He said Ruto’s first 100 days in leadership have been full of unattained promises. Raila accused Ruto’s government of “pulling more Kenyans out of the frying pan and throwing them into the flames\u201d.<\/p>\n

“These have been 100 days on the road to nowhere. Kenyans are worse off than they were during the campaigns,” he said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Ruto marked his first 100 days in office on December 21, having been sworn into office at Moi International Sports Stadium Kasarani on September 13. At the Eldoret Sports Club, Ruto said he was glad to see the Opposition criticising his administration.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have seen they are correcting us and even rating our performance, which is okay. I am glad that we have an opposition which is working for the people,\u201d he added. He said the last administration erred by teaming up with the Opposition.<\/p>\n

Present at the event were First Lady Mama Rachael Ruto, senators Jackson Mandago (Uasin Gishu), Allan Chesang (Trans Nzoia), Samson Cherargei (Nandi), National Assembly deputy speaker Gladys Boss Shollei, governors Jonathan Bii (Uasin Gishu), Wesley Rotich (Elgeyo Marakwet), and Kahiga Mutahi (Nyeri).<\/p>\n
