Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Kisumu county department of health has collected samples to get answers following an alarm raised over rare diseases attacking fishermen in two beaches within Lake Victoria.<\/p>\n

The two beaches in Nyando Sub County are Singida and Ogenya. The county director of Public Health Fred Oluoch confirmed the matter saying they received a call to action following the outbreak.<\/p>\n

“I want to confirm that the team from the health department is already on the ground and we have collected samples of urine, stool and blood to go and found out”.<\/p>\n

The alarm was raised by Ahero Ward representative Ken Ooko who noted that for the past four days, they have received complaints from fishermen over pains or swelling of the stomach.<\/p>\n

Also, the fishermen said they had noticed blood whenever they pass stool or urinate. Ooko said that the complaints have brought fear and worry amongst the fishermen and communities along the two beaches.<\/p>\n

“There is need for urgent action for this. We have to know what is happening and what the symptoms mean,” he told the media. Ooko who is also the assembly Majority leader added that he contacted the county’s health department immediately after he received the report.<\/p>\n

“Am happy that the department of health on Wednesday evening dispatched a team and started doing tests to find out what this disease is,” he stated.<\/p>\n

In addition, the legislator thanked the county for the swift response but also called upon the national government to intervene to ascertain what might have caused the symptoms.<\/p>\n
