Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Interior PS Raymond Omollo has said farmers should be equipped with knowledge behind their data collection as the government moves to register all farmers. Omollo spoke on Wednesday during the Training of Trainers programme launch at Kenya School of Government in Kabete.<\/p>\n

“We must equip our farmers with the information on why we are collecting their data, what it is going to be used for and also assurance that it will be kept in the right way so that then it is not subject to abuse,” he said.<\/p>\n

The training marks an important milestone in implementation of President William Ruto\u2019s directive and commitment on commencement of the fertiliser subsidy programme. Omollo told the trainees they will be equipped with the necessary skills for the programme.<\/p>\n

He added that upon completion of the training, the trainees will be required to train chiefs and assistant chiefs in their respective counties as they prepare for the registration.<\/p>\n

The PS further gave a sound warning to those who might be seeking to turn this into a profit making venture. He said the officials are expected to uphold the highest level of inclusivity, integrity and fairness throughout the registration process.<\/p>\n

“The process shall not be coercive or mandatory, rather it shall be voluntary and based on informed decisions by farmers upon appreciating the reason for registration,” Omollo said<\/p>\n

The PS also said registration will be free of charge. The registration exercise targets farmers participating in various crop production enterprises. It’s main aim is to establish a national database of all farmers, which includes identity, profile, location, crop acreage and fertiliser requirements.<\/p>\n
