Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Former nominated Senator Isaac Mwaura has proposed that the deputy opposition leader should join the Senate. Speaking on Tuesday at KTN, Mwaura said that the office of opposition is important to oversight the government. He said that the leader who comes second in presidential elections should join the National Assembly.<\/p>\n

“The best thing is that if you have become number two, join the National Assembly. I would even go further and propose that the running mate should join the senate, that way they can lead their people from within because you never know who is going to be the next leader of the opposition,” he said.<\/p>\n

Mwaura said that having the opposition in the legislature will provide an opportunity to get alternative views. This is after President William Ruto’s proposal to create an official opposition office.<\/p>\n

The President’s proposal came under sharp criticism with leaders arguing that the official opposition will not fit in the current presidential system.<\/p>\n

Some Azimio leaders came out strongly to oppose the creation of the office. The leaders said Ruto’s intentions must be interrogated carefully especially when they appear to be very good.<\/p>\n

However, Ruto came clean on the creation of the office of the opposition saying that he is not planning to reward Azimio leader Raila Odinga through his proposal to create the office of an official opposition leader.<\/p>\n

“Mimi simtafutii mtu kazi? Nikisema the office of the opposition leader is an institution, not a person, mimi natafuta accountability,” he said.<\/p>\n

(I am not creating a job opportunity for anyone. When I talk about the office of the opposition leader, it’s an institution, not a person. I am looking for accountability).<\/p>\n

He said if he was a selfish man he would have a problem with individuals opposing his administration saying in a democracy, the opposition ought to have a place in government.<\/p>\n
