Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo on Thursday launched a Wi-Fi hotspot at Kapsabet. The CS said that the launch is in line with the government’s initiative to provide free internet.<\/p>\n

“As part of our ongoing government’s provision of free Internet to Kenyan youth and business people at the bottom of the social ladder, I have this morning launched a Wi-Fi hotspot at the Kapsabet Market, Nandi County,” he said.<\/p>\n

Kenya Kwanza government is targeting to launch 5,000 free public Wi-Fi hotspots across the county by December 2023. Owalo said by the end of 2027, President William Ruto\u2019s administration would have rolled out 25,000 free wifi places.<\/p>\n

The CS explained that through the digital infrastructure initiative, at least 1.5 to 2 million jobs can be created. \u201cOne thing we have realised is that we have moved the youth idling near bus stops to close proximity of the free Wi-Fi hotspots. We want to leverage technology for purposes of digital jobs for our youth,” Owalo said.<\/p>\n

By launching the WiFi programmes, the CS noted that it will help address inequity for marginalised communities that can’t meet the high cost of data by creating numerous job opportunities that local youth can capitalise on.<\/p>\n

Leaders present were Nandi governor Stephen Sang, Nandi deputy governor Yulita Cheruiyot, and Uasin Gishu Senator Jackson Mandago among other leaders.<\/p>\n
