Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Public health officials in Kilifi county have managed to trace a 36-year- old woman who developed a rare allergic reaction due to cashew nut crushing. This was after her pictures surfaced on social media platforms.<\/p>\n

The woman whose name has not been revealed is said to have a history of atopy, a problem of the immune system that makes an individual more likely to develop allergic diseases.<\/p>\n

According to a tweet by the Kilifi county department of Health, the woman is said to have worked in various cashew nut processing factories for several years and started developing allergic reactions five years ago.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was today diagnosed by a dermatologist at Kilifi County Referral Hospital, with a personal history of atopy and contact irritant dermatitis caused by an allergic reaction to cashew oil,\u201d the department said in a tweet.<\/p>\n

The woman, according to the department has already undergone free treatment and has been educated on skincare and the proper use of personal protective equipment.<\/p>\n

\u201cPublic health officers shall continue conducting a routine inspection of all industries, with the sole purpose of educating workers and issuing compliance notices to owners, as required by the Public Health laws,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n

Health experts have listed irritants such as soaps and detergents, including shampoo, washing-up liquid and bubble baths as some of the most common triggers of atopy.<\/p>\n

Environmental factors or allergens such as cold and dry weather, dampness, and more specific things such as house dust mites, pet fur, pollen and molds are also some of the causes.<\/p>\n

Mayo Clinic, an online health site describes contact dermatitis as an itchy rash caused by direct contact with a substance or an allergic reaction to it.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe rash isn’t contagious, but it can be very uncomfortable. Many substances can cause this reaction, such as cosmetics, fragrances, jewelry and plants. The rash often shows up within days of exposure,\u201d it says.<\/p>\n
