Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>A Kenyan activist Shamsa Abubakar Fadhil known as \u201c Mama Shamsa\u201d bagged the Zayed Award for Human Fraternity, for leading campaigns in Kenya and Africa that empowered youth and provided social services.<\/p>\n

In a statement dated Tuesday, January 31, Mama Shamsa was acknowledged for demonstrating how people committed to working together for the common good could heal the world.<\/p>\n

The announcement further stated that Fadhil had saved many Kenyans by providing counselling, care and training.<\/p>\n

Fadhil and the Community of Sant\u2019Egidio were the two, out of 200 nominees, recognised for their contributions towards inspiring others by promoting peaceful coexistence.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe award recognises the two co-honorees for their contributions to building a peaceful world through advancing the values of human fraternity,\u201d the announcement document stated.<\/p>\n

Mohamed Abdelsalam, the Secretary-General of the award noted that Fadhil was an outstanding leader who dedicated her life to building a resilient community.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe is a truly outstanding leader who dedicated her life to addressing division among communities and cultivating compassion and hope,\u201d Abdelsalam stated.<\/p>\n

Moreover, a judging committee member Miguel A\u0301ngel Moratinos lauded the nominees stating that they were ordinary people who were doing great things in the world.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis year\u2019s honorees demonstrate how ordinary people with a dedication to serving others and in recognition that we are all members of one human family can change the world,\u201d Moratinos added.<\/p>\n

The award was decided by an independent judging committee comprised of international experts in promoting peace and human rights including the United Nations (UN).<\/p>\n

Fadhil and the Community of Sant\u2019Egidio will be honored during an award ceremony dubbed the UN recognised International Day of Human Fraternity in the United Arab Emirates on Saturday, February 4.<\/p>\n

The award, including a Ksh124 million prize, is an annual event that recognises individuals all over the world who create breakthroughs towards peaceful coexistence.<\/p>\n
