Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Nyandarua MCA Milcah Wanjiru has called for efforts to train women Members of County Assemblies once they have been elected or nominated. Wanjiru said that it is particularly hard to be a nominated woman Member of the County Assembly among many male MCAs.<\/p>\n

“The reason why we are struggling with the men in positions today in the county assemblies is that we come to that county assembly very naive,” she said.<\/p>\n

She said many women don’t know how to fight for various positions at the assemblies or how to work together. “It’s not just enough to nominate women. These women need training,” she said.<\/p>\n

Wanjiru was speaking during an engagement with women’s rights groups on the advancement of women’s leadership on Friday. She asked the rights groups to take the matter of training very seriously.<\/p>\n

“So the first week of nomination, train the women so that way will have women MCAs in various positions in that county assembly,” she said. Wanjiru said, from experience, men choose their positions at the assemblies quickly and leave little for the women.<\/p>\n

She said because she had gotten training before joining the County Assembly, she created the Women’s Caucus in her county and started advocating for women’s issues.<\/p>\n

“So one of the things that we pushed at the women’s caucus was to ensure the woman nominated is treated as an elected member,” she said.<\/p>\n

Now, she said, elected men are given two top positions and elected women are given three positions at her county Assembly. “If we were not together as women, we would not have achieved that,” she said. She called on women leaders to support each other, whether elected or nominated.<\/p>\n
