However, with so many responsibilities and expectations, it can be challenging to maintain a healthy mental state, especially for students who are studying while working part-time.<\/p>\n<p>This is a common scenario for many students in colleges and universities, who are striving to make the most of their education while balancing the demands of their daily lives.<\/p>\n<p>Rodgers Otiso from Rongo university and Marygorete Mumbua Musyoka of Moi University, share their experiences and insights on how they navigate the challenges of balancing academic work and personal well-being.<\/p>\n<p>Rodgers Otiso, a second-year student majoring in journalism, works part-time as a freelance writer to support his education. Despite his busy schedule, he recognizes the importance of taking care of his mental health and has found ways to prioritise it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have learned to set boundaries and prioritise my tasks, so I don&#8217;t get overwhelmed,&#8221; Otiso says.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I also make sure to create my time, whether it&#8217;s going for a walk, reading a book, or just sitting quietly and meditating.&#8221; Otiso&#8217;s approach is one of proactive self-care, which he believes is essential for maintaining a healthy mental state.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;College is full of stress and pressure, but I have learned that taking care of my mental health is just as important as my academic work,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I make sure to carve out time for myself every day, even if it&#8217;s just a few minutes, so I can recharge and feel refreshed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mumbua also understands the importance of finding a balance between her academic and personal life. &#8220;I know that studying is important, but I also know that my mental health is crucial,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I make sure to allocate time for things that bring me joy, like playing sports or catching up with friends.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mumbua&#8217;s approach is one of mindfulness and self-awareness, and she believes that recognising the signs of stress and burnout is key to maintaining a healthy mental state.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When I feel overwhelmed, I take a step back and assess my situation,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think about what I need to feel better and take action, whether that&#8217;s talking to a friend, practising yoga, or just taking a nap.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dr Maren Akongo, a senior lecturer at Rongo University in the Media and Communication department emphasizes the importance of seeking support when faced with stress and burnout.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s okay to ask for help, and it&#8217;s important to reach out to friends, family, or mental health professionals if you are feeling overwhelmed,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are also many resources available on campus, including counselling services and student organizations, that can offer support and help you cope with stress.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For students who are struggling to manage their time, Dr Akongo says making a to-do list, breaking down tasks into smaller parts, and setting realistic goals are key.<\/p>\n<p>She also recommends students engage in physical activity, get enough sleep, and eat a healthy diet, as these habits can help improve mood and reduce stress.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Exercise is a great way to release stress and improve mental health, and getting enough sleep and eating a healthy diet can also help boost your mood and energy levels,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For More News And Analysis About <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/kenya\">Kenya<\/a> Follow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/\">Africa-Press<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Kenya.
