Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi has told off President William Ruto over his recent overtures on tax collection. Ngunyi said weaponizing tax will lead to his failure.<\/p>\n

\u201cSell hope to the Nation. Weaponizing tax is a double-edged sword. It will slay Mama Ngina today, then Mama Mboga tomorrow,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

In a speech, during the National Assembly Post-Election Seminar in Mombasa on January 30, the President spoke against those who have used their power to exempt themselves from paying taxes.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe cannot continue to operate in a space where those in power exempt themselves from paying taxes using all manner of instruments while those who do not have as much power pay tax,\u201d Ruto said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll I\u2019m saying is that for the good people who are used to exempting themselves from paying taxes, their day is up. Every citizen must pay tax.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ruto on Sunday reiterated his commitment and stance on tax payments saying every person regardless of their stature in society will be required to pay their dues.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am also equally happy that we have all agreed and have built a consensus that irrespective of your status, all of us have built a consensus that there will be no waiver of taxes for anybody,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Ngunyi told Ruto that the Kenyattas are not his enemy. He also warned Ruto that the people will become his enemies “The people will become your enemy. And the groundswell has started. Take it or leave it,” he said.<\/p>\n
