Milimani principal magistrate Robinson Ondieki on Thursday detained the suspects after a successful application by the police who had sought seven days to detain them pending investigations. The magistrate remanded the 10 at Central police station until Monday when he will rule on whether to release them.<\/p>\n<p>The suspects namely Isaac Kipkemoi, Gideon Rono, Moses Rono, Collins Kipyegon, Maxwell Ributhu, Edwin Cheruiyot, Gedion Kiru, Peter Wambui, Brenda Chepng&#8217;eno and Linda Cherono are believed to be members of a fraud syndicate that obtained Sh449.6 million through a popular mobile phone platform supported by mobile communication service provider, Safaricom.<\/p>\n<p>The court heard, the service provider through its Fuliza overdraft service, lost the money in a well-coordinated scheme by the 10 suspects. &#8220;The complainant at NCBA bank requested this Unit to carry on investigations into fraudulent transactions perpetrated through their digital borrowing scheme,&#8221; the Investigating officer said.<\/p>\n<p>According to the police, the suspects used more than 123,000 Safaricom lines to borrow money from Fuliza in January 2022. &#8220;Your honour, this is a clear case of fraud wherein the perpetrators hatched a meticulous plan of acquiring several sim cards. They opened many bank accounts and applied for the Fuliza loan with intention of not paying them back,&#8221; the investigating officer said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We seek seven-day custodial order to complete our investigations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The suspects were found in possession of 3,000 Safaricom and Airtel SIM cards, 7 laptops, more than 40 mobile phones, 10 IDs, and 14 Safaricom registering machine assorted electronics and motor vehicles.
