Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Culture and Heritage principal secretary Ummi Bashir will on Tuesday be sworn in as a member of the National Heroes Council. Chief Justice Martha Koome will preside over the swearing-in ceremony at the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n

The council currently has nine members with Al-Hajj Adan Wachu as the chairperson while Bernice Gachegu as the vice chair. World Marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge, veteran journalist Leonard Mambo Mbotela and award-winning school teacher Peter Tabichi are the other members.<\/p>\n

National Treasury principal secretary and Christine Omwakwe who represents the Attorney General are also part of the council. The Council is a state corporation established by the Kenya Heroes Act No 5 of 2014 in accordance with the State Corporations Act CAP.<\/p>\n

It defines a person as a hero if one has positively contributed selflessly and sacrificed for the country in any of the functional areas set out in the First Schedule.<\/p>\n

The functions of the Council include formulating and implementing policies relating to national heroes, identifying and recommending national heroes and administering state assistance to national heroes where necessary.<\/p>\n

It also establishes and oversees the management of the national heroes\u2019 square and oversees the design and creation of appropriate commemorative items for purposes of honouring national heroes.<\/p>\n

Its objectives are to strengthen policy, regulatory and institutional framework, recognise, inspire and appreciate their contribution to the welfare of mankind and commemorate the heroic deeds. It also builds capacity of the institution for effective service delivery and offer support services to the heroes in need.<\/p>\n
