Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Peninah Malonzi has said the bed nights and room occupancy in the hotel sector improved in 2022. Malonza said bed and room occupancy increased from 4,138,821 guests in hotels to 5,726,609 in 2022.<\/p>\n

Malonza said the Covid-19 pandemic made the hotel industry experience less visitors due to the restrictions while trying to control the spread of the virus.<\/p>\n

“In 2019, bed occupancy stood at 6,416,730 and dropped to 2,575,812 in 2020 when the pandemic came,” Malonza said. Malonza said the hotel industry which is a private industry greatly contributes to tourism in the country.<\/p>\n

She said that last year, the month of November saw the greatest number of guests occupy beds and rooms in hotels at 912,560 guests. The CS spoke on Wednesday as she released the 2022 Tourism performance report.<\/p>\n

In December, the holiday month, 859,287 guests occupied beds and rooms in hotels across the country. Malonza also said that bed occupancy by international visitors in between the months of January to September increased from 1.033,408 in the years 2021 to 2,048,807 in the year 2022.<\/p>\n

“This indicated a 98 per cent growth,” she said. Malonza said November 2022 saw the largest number of international tourists that occupied hotels in the country at 512,212 guests.<\/p>\n

She said domestic bed occupancy of hotels in Kenya also increased from 3,105,413 in 2021 to 3,677,872 in 2022. Domestic room occupancy also increased from 3,084,957 to 3,687,365 in 2022.<\/p>\n
