Both President William Ruto and his main rival in the 2022 presidential election, Raila Odinga, are leaving nothing to chance.

For instance, President Ruto has embarked on an aggressive strategy to consolidate his Kenya Kwanza alliance by raiding Raila’s Azimio machine. Ruto has managed to win over some of Raila’s allies, sparking an outcry from Azimio top guns who have accused him of attempting to kill democracy.

Already, Ruto has the support of more than a dozen of MPs from Raila’s Azimio coalition as well as a couple of governors. Analysts say the President is in early 2027 consolidation plans as he moves to build a gigantic political machine against a possible rematch with Raila.

The President is also at the centre of the political storm roiling the Jubilee party where a faction allied to him is in an all out war to take control of the outfit.

Raila has protested at the latest maneuvers claiming Ruto is practising monolithic tendencies aimed at returning the country to the dark days of single-party rule.

“Parties other than the one in power are being made to count for nothing, Kenya Kwanza is taking us back to single-party era of Mtukufu Rais,” protest Raila last week.

All elected Jubilee MPs- at least 30-and former lawmakers have pledged their loyalty to the President and vowed to work with the Kenya Kwanza government.

The President is also traversing the country for what has been couched as prayer and thanksgiving services in what analysts say is part of the consolidation efforts.

On his part, Raila has rolled out a robust campaign to hold his Azimio la Umoja intact despite Ruto’s raids. The veteran opposition chief has embarked on countrywide rallies dubbed as the people’s barazas, railing against the government over the high cost of living.

The opposition bigwigs have also been accusing the government of killing multipartism in the country, putting President Ruto under immense pressure. With both President Ruto and Raila on what analysts call a ‘campaign trail’ the country is on the tenterhooks a few months after a charged presidential election.

“It is sad that we are back to the campaign mode, it is even more likely that the campaigns will escalate long before the 2027 general election,” said political analysts Alexander Nyamboga.

“There is no indication that Raila will budge down, it is also predictable that Ruto will sustain his religious gatherings across the country.”

Clearly, barely six months after Kenyans went to the ballot, party politics have crawled back to making headlines, threatening to raise political temperatures.

Whioe Ruto has been meeting political players at State House, Raila has also held at least two ODM party meetings to strategise and quell internal revolt.

A section of MPs have launched a rebellion within the party, pushing for radical changes within the ODM hierarchy amid a heap of unresolved issues and bottled-up anger.

Earlier this month ,ODM chairman John Mbadi recently cited the last party primaries as some of the areas that remain unresolved and which disfranchised a section of the party members.

“As far as I am concerned we were meant to discuss some of the issues that arose at the party primaries and generally looking at the last election to see where we probably went wrong,” Mbadi said.

Mbadi who is the longest serving ODM chairman has blamed the party’s National Elections Board for bungling the primaries. Others within ODM are pushing for punishment against the disloyal politicians who visited Ruto at State House, calling them ‘traitors’.

An unapologetic President, William Ruto told off critics over his decision to meet with politicians allied to the opposition. “We have no apologies to make for working with anyone,” he said.

As the political circus takes centre stage, the war for the hart and soul of the Jubilee party has entered a decisive stage. Former Kieni MP Kanini Kega, who is allied to a faction supporting the government, has engineered a coup in the party.

A controversial National Executive Committee meeting last month named Kega as the acting Secretary general, taking over from Jeremiah Kioni. However, the political parties dispute resolution tribunal reinstated Kioni, awaiting the hearing and determination of the case challenging the legality of the NEC.

While the Kega faction want Jubilee to work with Ruto, Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, the party’s leader, says it is fully in Azimio. “Even though I’m not in active politics, I’m still in the party and we are still part of and support Azimio coalition. Nothing has changed,” Uhuru said recently in Kisumu.

Azimio has kicked off the process of replacing Isiolo Senator Fatuma Dullo from the Senate leadership for working with Kenya Kwanza. Dullo was among the 32 Jubilee legislators who met President Ruto at the State House.

Source: The Star

For More News And Analysis About Kenya Follow Africa-Press

Africa-Press – Kenya.
