Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Kirinyaga Governor and Council of Governors Chair Ann Waiguru has pledged to stand with women leaders who have been cyberbullied.<\/p>\n

Waiguru said that as a victim herself, she understands that it is vital to support other women.<\/p>\n

She was speaking during the launch dubbed Stop Cyberbullies Now! A campaign by Echo Network Africa.<\/p>\n

She said that there are some attacks that are harsh and vile while others lack a reaction.<\/p>\n

“There are those that upset you but there are those that make you wonder whether to be angry or not,” she said.<\/p>\n

She recalled that in both 2017 and 2022, she had the privilege of running against two other women, Narc-Kenya leader Martha Karua and Wangui Ngirici.<\/p>\n

“The attacks online in 2017 were bad but 2022 was worse because we had also seven male candidates running,” she said.<\/p>\n

She said that for some reason, the campaign teams of the other candidates tended to focus their attack on women candidates, mostly on appearance and associations.<\/p>\n

“So you are assigned a boyfriend on the internet. Your features are put out there and they start circulating,” she said.<\/p>\n

She said those people really didn’t care about the impact of that kind of attack on an individual or their family for that matter.<\/p>\n

“There was one day we woke up and our legs as women aspirants were on social media,” she said.<\/p>\n

She said they were not being elected to walk. It is not our legs but what it is we had done for the last five years.<\/p>\n

Despite those attacks, she said, aimed at discrediting her leadership and undermining her authority, she was not deterred.<\/p>\n

“And I continue to focus on my main goal,” she said.<\/p>\n

“I, therefore, urge all of us to remain resilient and focus to scale the highest leadership positions,” she said.<\/p>\n
