AfricaPress-Kenya:<\/strong> Kenya has surpassed the 1,000 threshold of Coronavirus infections today after recording 66 new cases.<\/p>\n

This is the highest yet since the pandemic was first announced in the country in mid-March. The national tally is now at 1,029 cases.Briefing the nation on the status of the virus, Health CS Mutahi Kagwe (pictured) said that 64 of the cases were Kenyans while two were foreigners.<\/p>\n

Thirty of the cases are from Mombasa County, 26 from Nairobi, and three from Kajiado County.<\/p>\n

The ministry has also noted that Covid-19 cases were on the rise in the counties.\u00a0\u201cSome areas in Mombasa County like Likoni and Changamwe are of major concern,\u201d CS Kagwe adding that\u00a0the National Emergency Response Committee on Covid-19 had upped measures to contain the spread of the virus especially in areas listed as high-risk.<\/p>\n

The Government also extended the cessation of movement in Eastleigh, Nairobi, and Old Town, Mombasa,\u00a0 for another two weeks until June 6.Eateries, restaurants are also to remain closed until June 6, including hawking.<\/p>\n

Porous borders<\/strong><\/p>\n

The CS, however, acknowledged the lengths the truck drivers have to go through to deliver cargo, enduring long journeys and long waits at border points.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe apologise and regret the inconvenience they continue to experience but these are necessary measures that must be taken.\u201dHe said Kenya had received two Covid-19n mobile testing laboratories from the Germany embassy to aid in the fight against the disease.One laboratory will be stationed at the Namanga border point and the other in Naivasha.<\/p>\n

East African Community CS Adan Mohamed added: \u201cGiven the nature of our porous borders, we can only be as strong as our weakest link. \u00a0The challenges we have seen at the borders will hopefully be dealt with through the mobile labs.\u201dOn Tuesday, The Ministry of Health yesterday used\u00a0statistics to demonstrate the danger lurking along\u00a0the Kenya-Tanzania border.<\/p>\n

The Namanga border point leads with the highest number of cases at 126, followed by Lunga Lunga with 24, Taveta 23, Loitoktok five and Isebania four. Tanzania disputes Kenya’s\u00a0figures.<\/p>\n

Kagwe noted that the setbacks in managing the disease along the border was due to Tanzania\u00a0not testing\u00a0her truck drivers while leaving the country.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
