{"id":8994,"date":"2020-06-03T18:21:00","date_gmt":"2020-06-03T18:21:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\/kenya\/?p=8994"},"modified":"2020-06-03T18:21:00","modified_gmt":"2020-06-03T18:21:00","slug":"how-kamar-scaled-up-deputy-speakers-post","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/kenya\/policy\/how-kamar-scaled-up-deputy-speakers-post","title":{"rendered":"How Kamar scaled up deputy speaker\u2019s post"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"standard-content \">\n<div class=\"content\" data-io-article-url=\"https:\/\/www.standardmedia.co.ke\/article\/2001373703\/how-kamar-scaled-up-deputy-speaker-s-post\"><strong>AfricaPress-Kenya:<\/strong> Uasin Gishu Senator Margaret Kamar smoothly scaled up the ladder to the vacant Senate deputy speaker seat yesterday in the shadows of President Uhuru Kenyatta, Opposition Chief Raila Odinga and Kanu Chairman Gideon Moi.<\/div>\n<div class=\"content\" data-io-article-url=\"https:\/\/www.standardmedia.co.ke\/article\/2001373703\/how-kamar-scaled-up-deputy-speaker-s-post\">\nIn a historic first, Prof Kamar was yesterday elected unopposed as the Senate deputy speaker taking over from embattled fellow professor Kithure Kindiki (Tharaka Nithi), who was impeached last month.A former university lecturer, Kamar\u2019s competitors were ODM\u2019s Steward Madzayo (Kilifi) and Judith Pareno (nominated) and Jubilee\u2019s Isaac Mwaura (nominated) and Charles Kibiru (Independent, Kirinyaga).However, the four withdrew from the race, leaving the Uasin Gishu Senator as the sole candidate for the lucrative Deputy Speaker\u2019s post.<\/div>\n<div class=\"content\" data-io-article-url=\"https:\/\/www.standardmedia.co.ke\/article\/2001373703\/how-kamar-scaled-up-deputy-speaker-s-post\">\n\u201cThe four senators by notice in writing to the Clerk, withdrew their candidature for election to the Office of Deputy Speaker.\u201cThis leaves Kamar as the only candidate for election to the Office of the Deputy Speaker. Accordingly, I hereby declare Kamar to be duly elected as Deputy Speaker of the Senate,\u201d Lusaka said.<\/div>\n<div data-io-article-url=\"https:\/\/www.standardmedia.co.ke\/article\/2001373703\/how-kamar-scaled-up-deputy-speaker-s-post\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"content\" data-io-article-url=\"https:\/\/www.standardmedia.co.ke\/article\/2001373703\/how-kamar-scaled-up-deputy-speaker-s-post\">Standing Order 11 as read together with Standing Order 13(4) states that in the event that there is only one candidate who has been duly nominated for election as Deputy Speaker, that candidate will be declared forthwith to have been elected without any ballot or vote being required.
