Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>The General Service Unit coach Gideon Tarus has said the club is disappointed to miss out on this year’s African Clubs Volleyball Championship due to financial challenges.<\/p>\n

The men’s championship is set for May 9-22 while the women’s showpiece will be staged between May 13-26 in Tunisia. This is the third time in a row the paramilitary side have given the continental assignment a wide berth.<\/p>\n

GSU last played in the tournament in 2019. The multiple Kenya Volleyball Federation league champions finished in a lowly ninth position. So far, Kenya Ports Authority is the only team to confirm participation in the men’s category while Trailblazers who finished third last season are also eligible to take part in the event.<\/p>\n

Kenya’s representatives last year were KPA and Equity Bank. “It is saddening to miss on the club championship again but we have to accept. It is a big blow to the players but the matter is beyond our control,” Tarus said.<\/p>\n

Tarus cited a lack of morale as one of the reasons hampering the team’s performance this season. The team is expected to return to training next week after the players were given a week-long break this week after their exploits in the fourth leg of the league matches at the Nyayo stadium last weekend.<\/p>\n

“Players lack motivation. Even there’s no cash award for winning the league. However, we will talk to the players and try to encourage them to maintain the high standards they have set in the last five years,” Tarus observed.<\/p>\n

GSU have won the last four league trophies in a row. The team failed to defend the East Africa Police Chiefs Cooperation Organization (EAPCCO) trophy last month in Rwanda. GSU also faced an early elimination from the Paul Bitok national volleyball tournament at the start of the month.<\/p>\n

“We are winning matches but struggling. We lost many players in the middle of the season so it was hard finding replacement. Our squad is not as strong as it was previously,” Tarus added.<\/p>\n
