Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Bumula MP Wanami Wamboka has accused private universities of trying to influence changes in the university admissions policy.<\/p>\n

Wamboka claimed some of the universities have been trying to ensure the funding policy is not reversed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey have been lobbying am sure they have come to you. They have been trying to float money thinking the children of Kenya will continue to suffer,\u201d Wamboka said.<\/p>\n

The legislator was speaking during the Public Investments Committee on Education and Governance on Thursday.<\/p>\n

Wamboka who is also the committee chair said the policy is almost being fully reversed.<\/p>\n

\u201cAm sure they have even come to you to try and change what we are doing but we are focused to ensure our public universities no longer suffer,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The policy on placement of government students in private universities began in 2016.<\/p>\n

This was after the increased number of students who scored grades C plus and above.<\/p>\n

But KUCCPS CEO Agnes Wahome now says public universities have full capacity to take in all students.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis year 173,345 scored C plus and above while public universities have a capacity of 194,00,\u201d Wahome said.<\/p>\n

While unveiling a new university funding model, President William Ruto said poor students will receive more grants and fewer loans.<\/p>\n

He reiterated his stand on the policy of funding students in private universities.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo conditional grants will be sent to private universities. They will only be eligible for student loans like others,\u201d Ruto said.<\/p>\n
