Africa-Press – Kenya. <\/strong><\/span>Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has urged President William Ruto to allow for the exhumation of the remains of Mau Mau fighter Dedan Kimathi. Speaking during the funeral service of the late Mama Mukami Kimathi, Gachagua said the elders know where his remains are.<\/p>\n

“Tunakuomba kwa heshima, uskize kilio cha MauMau, hawa wazee wanasema wanajua pahali Kimathi alizikwa, ukikubali uwapatie nafasi, watuonyeshe mahali ako, tumpee mazishi ya kiheshima,” he said.<\/p>\n

(We urge you with all respect, to listen to the cry of the elders, these men say they know where Dedan Kimathi was buried, if you agree, let them show us where the grave is so that we can give him a decent send-off)<\/p>\n

Ruto said Kimathi was embarrassedly buried yet he fought for the freedom of the country. “The government will collaborate with the elders to look for the remains of Kimathi, the government is ready.”<\/p>\n

Kimathi is credited with leading efforts to create formal military structures within the Mau Mau, and convening a war council in 1953. Alongside Musa Mwariama, General China and Muthoni Kirima, he was one of the Field Marshals.<\/p>\n

On September 12, 2015, the British government unveiled a Mau Mau memorial statue in Nairobi’s Uhuru Park that it funded “as a symbol of reconciliation between the British government, the Mau Mau, and all those who suffered”.<\/p>\n

In his remembrance also is an academic institution-Dedan Kimathi University of Technology in Nyeri. The varsity is the successor of the Kimathi Institute of Technology (KIT) established in 1972.<\/p>\n

It was upgraded to a University status in 2007 and renamed Kimathi University College of Technology (KUCT), a constituent college of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. The institution acquired full university status and current name after being granted its charter in 2012.<\/p>\n
